Foreword
It has often been said that engineering is an art and not a science, but this is no longer true in many branches of engineering. However, it is possibly more nearly true in the field of construction than in any other. In the present trend toward the application of scientific methods in all fields of engineering, the fact that the construction field has lagged behind is apparent when one realizes that it has been well over a decade since the last important book on this topic appeared.
This book contains a careful application of reason and logic to the formerly almost empirical practice of construction, yet it is still a practical book, eminently useful to all those engaged in the construction industry.
The long association of Dean Kellogg with construction practices is obvious from the content and arrangement of the subject matter.
