INTRODUCTION
T'ai Chi Chuan is one oHhe gjreat Chinese_gifts to mankind. In > \ different forms it has survived the warTand catastrophes which have befallen its country of origin, and today flourishes in most parts of the world. Perhaps its survival is due to its gentle nature; it is not hard but soft and flowing, like the Tao, life itself.
In this book I have tried to offer to you a broad picture of the art of T'ai Chi Chuan, a methodical way into its practical study, and some of my own experiences, thoughts and feelings. As I am English and not Chinese, I hope that my exposition will do more to open the subject to Western students than most of the books written by Chinese authors. The latter's works mainly take the form of a step-by-step description of what to do, but not how to do it, not how to 'get into it'.
If you follow what I say and apply it then your journey into T'ai Chi Chuan will be one of discovery. Your study will be well founded, and you will have found a friend forjife — yourself! ^
