Current Classification of Anaerobic bacteria. (Summary) -J.Infect. l,Suppl. 1, 3-12 (1979) Trends of practical importance in the classification and identification of a number of anaerobic bacteria are discussed, with special reference to the pathogenic Clostridia and the Gram-negative non-sporing anaerobic bacilli. Debated pathogenic associations of some of the Clostridia are outlined, and the need for a new typing scheme for the CI. perfringens group is noted. The development of the sub-classification of the Bacteroides-Fusobacterium-Lep-totrichia groups is considered in relation to the conflict between reliable tests that are practicable in the service laboratory and short-cut tests that may confuse classification. WILKINSON,C. R. (Lab. Histol. Biol. Tissulaire, Univ. Claude Bernard, 69000 Lyon 1/France). B d e 11 o v i b r i o - L i ke Parasite of Cyanobac-teria Symbiotic in Marine Sponges. (Abstract) - Arch.Microbiol. 123, 101-103 (1979)
A bdellovibrio-like bacterium was observed infecting unicellular symbiotic cyanobacteria in two coral reef sponges, Neofibularia irata and Jaspis stel-lifera. The infecting bacterium, which was located between the cell wall and the cytoplasmic membrane of the cyanobacteria, was similar in size and appearance to previously described bdellovibrios. This observation is believed to extend the host range of the bdellovibrios. (Sp)
CWYK.W.M.and E.CANALE-PAROLA (Dept. Microbiol., Univ. of Massachusetts .Amherst/Mass. 01003). T r e p o ne m a suecinifaciens sp. no V . , an A nae r obic Spirochete from the Swine Intestine. - Arch. Microbiol. 122,231-239 (1979) The morphology, the general physiological characteristics, and the energy-yielding metabolism of an obligately anaerobic spirochete isolated from the colon of a swine were studied. Electron microscopy showed that the helical spirochetal cells possessed an outer sheath, a protoplasmic cylinder, and 4 periplasmic fibrils in a 2-4-2 arrangement. The spirochete grew in an atmosphere of N2 in prereduced media containing a carbohydrate, NaHCOs, rumen fluid, yeast extract, peptone, L-cysteine, and inorganic salts. The spirochete fermented carbohydrates and required substrate amounts of C02 (HCO3) for growth. Amino acids were not fermented. The guanine + cytosine content of the DNA was 36mol%. This study indicates that this intestinal spirochete represents a new species of Treponema. It is proposed that the new species be named Treponema succinifaciens. (Sp)
