Disinfectants for surface disinfection must satisfy a number of requirements, an adequate microbicide effect of practice-proven concentrations and reaction times being the most important. Before an agent is recommended for a determined procedure, a detailed examination must be carried out. In the opinion of most of the experts the examination has to be broken down into an in-vitro test and the practical model test.
The experiments described in the following articles serve to develop a standardized model test. Smear, impression and rinsing methods can be basically considered. The smear method constitutes the basis for the evaluation of disinfectants for surface disinfection in Germany (guide lines of DGHM). However, for standardization it is suitable only to a limited extent as its reliability greatly depends on the qualification of the staff.
By contrast, the impression method (Rodac plate technique, agar sausage method, agar flex contact culture and the like) which has been used for a long time in determining the contamination of surfaces in hospitals, kitchens etc. lends itself better to standardization; it is easy to carry out, but several impressions are required to determine the total number of all surviving germs. The rinsing methods yield the highest rates of recovery, the difference between this procedure and the impression methods being probably due to a better dispersion of germ accumulations. Rinsing is undoubtedly the technically most expensive method. Since the evaluation must be based on the behaviour of several types of germs and since the test expenditure should not be excessively increased, the impression method is likely to be the best suited.
