Introduzione Prima di imbarcarmi nella scrittura di questo Libro, ero solo un appassionato che comprava un numero infinito di riviste. Attraverso queste, e seduto davanti alio schermo del televisore, ammiravo la profonditá dei burroni in Corsica, desideravo poter sentire un giorno sulla mia pelle il torrido caldo africano, desideravo poter vedere il paese dai mille laghi. Nel 2000 tutti questi sogni - insieme a molti, molti altri - si sono awerati. Sono stato presente a tutte le tappe deUa serie di gare di rally, a partiré da Monte Carlo, dove anche a gennaio risplendeil sole, fino alla nebbiosa Inghilterra. E' certamente un'esperienza única poter vedere una macchina mentre salta o esegue curve spericolate, ma comunque per me il RALLY significa molto di piú che una semplice attrazione circense. Trovo interessanti le persone che vivono in paesi lontani, la cultura varia e colorata delle diverse popolazioni. Queste cose rendono l'atmosfera di ogni corsa particolare. Girando i quattro continenti dove si organizzano le gare, ho cercato di realizzare fotografié e servizi che potessero dare a chi prende in mano, compra e porta a casa questo libro, la sensazione di aver visto e vissuto tutto ció. Tutte le gare sono splendide. I percorsi passano sólitamente attraverso i paesaggi caratteristici dei paesi organizzatori, inútilmente quindi mi chiedono sempre piú spesso qual'é la corsa piú bella: deciderlo é impossible. Coste marine dentellate come ricami, oceani di un colore blu profondo, ripide pareti rocciose, fitti boschi di pini e numeróse altre meraviglie delta natura fanno da sfondo pittoresco a questo bellissimo sport automobilistico. II Campionato Mondiale di Rally FIA é un lungo viaggio intorno al mondo che dura un anno intero e al quale io vorrei adesso invitare ogni Gentile Lettore. Welcome on the board and have a nice flight. I followed the races on the telly and wondered how deep the Corsican precipices really were; I wanted to experience the African heat and was curious to see the country of a thousand lakes with my own eyes. In 2000 these dreams - and a lot more - became true. The first race of this year's World Championship was held in Monaco, full of sunshine even in January, and the last race cut through the English fog. I feel lucky to have visited all the races. It is certain that it is a unique experience when a car jumps or takes a violent turn but I do not consider RALLY a circus show. It means a lot more than that to me. Peoples of far off countries and their cultures are totally different and so each race has a peculiar atmosphere. The snapshots I took and the reports I wrote on four continents will hopefully convey the experience to whoever buys this book and takes it home. Each race is beautiful; the route usually cuts through typical landscapes of the organising country. Friends ask me all the time which race is the most beautiful But it is simply impossible to say. Wonderful beaches, the deep blue of the ocean, staggering cliffs, dense pine-forests, and all the marvels of nature provide the background for this exciting motor sport.
