PREFACE
This Second Edition of Workbook in French Two Years is meant to assist those students and teachers who find the need to supplement the textbook with a clear explanation of each point studied and to drill that point in a multiplicity of interesting ways.
Thus the book is divided into several carefully organized units: Verbs, Grammatical Structures, Idioms, Vocabulary, and Civilisation Frangaise. Pas-sages for both auditory and reading comprehension, as well as practice in directed composition, are included to test mastery of all the linguistic phases. Since the principal aim of foreign language study is communication, an attempt has been made to use vitai vocabulary in meaningful sentences, to stress question-answer drills, and to make maximum use of the foreign language. The unit on Civiliza-tion, the exercises in the Vocabulary unit, and the cultural vignettes interspersed throughout the book are all in the foreign language. The modern approach is particularly evident in the number and variety of pattern drills included in the lessons.
The chapters on verbs offer a thorough review of the elements of the first year plus the material of the second year. In addition, they provide médiai review lessons, mastery exercises, optional lessons on the elementary uses of the subjunctive, and a mastery drill sheet that can be used with any verb. A separate section on irregular verbs is based upon the New York State word-list.
Each lesson is an entity in itself, so that the student who finds the need for review of a particular topic can easily fulfill that need. Because of the progres-sive nature of a textbook, the various aspects of a grammatical topic are generally fragmented in a number of lessons. In this Workbook, these aspects have been integrated to present a complete picture.
It is hoped that this Workbook, with its clear explanations, varied and attractive drills, significant vocabulary, and comprehensive reviews, will aid the student in his acquisition of the communication skills as well as give him insights into the culture of the French people.
The author wishes to express his earnest appreciation to the French Embassy Press & Information Division for their kind cooperation in furnishing the pic-tures from which most of the cultural vignettes were drawn by our artists.
