PREFACE The 1994-1995 edition of Work, Study, Travel Abroad: The Whole World Handbook marks the twelfth edition of the book. The Council on International Educational Exchange has been updating and revising this book every other year since the first edition was prepared in 1972. Although this new edition generally follows the format developed for the eleventh edition, the number of countries covered has increased, especially in Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific. This edition includes brief descriptions of more than 1,200 study, work, and travel programs abroad, and new maps with more detailed information than in previous editions. In addition, you'll find expanded recommendations of books to read and movies to see before going to specific countries. Two years of effort have gone into producing the twelfth edition of this book. Hundreds of people—including professors and advisers on college campuses, students recently returned from abroad, and CIEE personnel from Hong Kong to Bonn—have been involved in the project. We've researched the latest on international travel, updated program offerings, reviewed books and movies, created maps, put together fact sheets, and collected useful suggestions from people who've recently been overseas. We hope you'll be able to use some of the information we've gathered to make your trip more rewarding. We also hope that when you return from your trip abroad, you too will be part of the effort to revise and update the 1996-1997 edition.
