Sources and acknowledgments
Most books dealing with this subject are at least twenty years old. Those that I consulted principally, apart from standard dictionaries, and quoted occasionally in the text are:
A Dictionary of Modern American Usage by Herbert Horwill; A Dictionary of Americanisms edited by Mitford M. Mathews; The American Language by H. L. Mencken; Our Own Words by Mary H. Dohan; the monumental Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English by Eric Partridge; and the more popularly written and more recent The Changing English Language by Brian Foster.
The individuals who have helped me are too many to name. Most of my friends and many passing acquaintances have found themselves interrogated at one time or another on their use and understanding of certain words. Some allowed themselves to be formed into panels. David Sing-master, an American mathematics lecturer at the South London Polytechnic with an eclectic store of knowledge, generously loaned me his own extensive notes on the two languages, and these proved useful; and Katsuei Yamagishi, who has translated this dictionary into Japanese, contributed from his remarkable knowledge of the English language.
