Introduction
Call it mystique or adventure, whatever, West Africa has a power of attraction, which despite its sometimes primitive conditions, continues to entice Westerners to spend time and even careers here. They certainly don't come because it's 'comfortable'. In tlie rural Sahei, people live in hamlets scattered about the hot and dusty landscape studded with huge baobab trees. Others live in tropical
cities such as Freetown and Monrovia where every time it rains the electricity goes off and the sewers overflow.
Which isn't to say that the environment isn't interesting. You can experience sandy deserts and rain forests and everything in between. But the physical environment and the wildlife are not West Africa's principal attractions as they are in East Africa. West
