Preface
This handy dictionary is an accurate, reliable tool for learners of Spanish. With more than 25,000 words and expressions and with around 1,500 new words and phrases added to this edition, it provides a wide-ranging selection of the most useful and up-to-date vocabulary of both Spanish (in its different regional varieties) and English.
The dictionary is designed to be easily read and used, with bold headwords and a compact, time-saving format.
Phrasal verbs are indicated by a bullet point and are listed after the verb on which they are based (e.g., see entry for get).
Numbers are used to divide grammatical categories of headwords with a solid block ¦ denoting meaning categories with longer entries (e.g., see entry for do).
A number code (1-65) against a Spanish verb means that the verb is irregular. Model verbs for these irregular forms are displayed on pages (5) to (12) of the central supplement.
An asterisk against an English verb denotes that it is irregular. Forms for these verbs are located on pages (13) to (17) of the supplement. A double asterisk against a Spanish noun, however, means that the feminine noun takes the masculine definite article el (e.g., el agua). The plural form is las.
The new system for Spanish alphabetical order has been adopted. In this system, ch and II are no longer considered as separate letters of the alphabet, but each is incorporated at its respective position under c and I.
Finally, the syllabification of all English headwords has been included in this edition, providing the user with extra help.
