Preface
The past decade has witnessed impressive gains in surgery, specifically in
vascular surgery. The possibilities of reconstruction and revascularization
of ischemic areas have been expanded. Most surgeons' vascular experience
revolves around lower-extremity, carotid, and aortic reconstmctions; how- '
ever, knowledge and experience in the surgery of visceral vessels have r
grown as well. It is the purpose of this work to review the surgery of jz
visceral vessels in a concise, yet complete fashion.
The chapters in this volume provide a timely review of current i ¦
clinically applicable knowledge and experience. The first chapters were ^
designed to provide an overview of relevant information, including anatomy ;,
and development of the visceral vessels, the pathophysiologic processes ¦
involving the visceral vessels, and the diagnostic evaluation of visceral vascular disease. The management of the major surgical diseases of the
splanchnic and renal vessels is then discussed in chapters dealing with ''
intestinal ischemia, visceral aneurysms, Takayasu's disease, and renovascular
hypertension. The book is not a surgical atlas; however, technical aspects \
of surgical treatment are discussed when appropriate. Likewise, some
original investigative data are included, although we have not assembled a
"Journal of Visceral Research."
We are indebted to the authors and coauthors for the quality of their ./
efforts. They are surgeons from throughout the United States and abroad j i
