James Plunkett Strumpet City James Plunkett, born in 1920, is an Irishman from the neigh-, bourhood of Dublin. He studied music and has been a freelance music and theatre critic, has written book reviews, radio and television plays, the reportage " The Gems She Wore 1972, and short stories. One of them, " The Half-Crown ", was included in a collection of Irish short stories, published in Leipzig in 1966. Until 1971 he was on the staff of the Irish Republican radio and television company R.T.E. For ten years a union official he became intimately acquainted with the Irish working class and its history. In " Strumpet ^ City ", published in England in 1969, Plunkett shows that whenever the workers are united and organised they I become invincible. The message of the novel is optimistic: the workers will carry on their struggle and one day triumph. This message is not only made transparent by the author's literary skill in depicting individual characters but also by his presentation of the workers as a class whose political struggle forms the individual worker. Plunkett makes it clear that only the working class has a !(: legitimate claim to lead the nation towards national liberation jj and social progress. [V Background of " Strumpet City " is the Larkin 2 " Labour War " i) oi 1913. At that time Ireland was a British colony. The Larkin ' " Labour War " was one of the greatest labour struggles in West European history and a turning point in Irish history. It began t, when Dublin workers on strike were slandered by a prominent , Dublin paper. James Larkin, organiser of a boycott of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, called for a boycott of , the paper. Lock-outs and strikes in practically all the major enterprises in Dublin, involving railwaymen, carters, dockers, etc., almost paralysed that city. In this extremity ^ the workers faced ' strumpet ['strAmpit] Dirne, Prostituierte - ^ James (Jim) Larkin ['la:kin] -' extnmity [iks'tremiti] hier: äußerst angespannte Situation
