by Dennis Hamley The Beck family, Mum, ten year-old Anna, and Paul, seven, lived in the country, not far from a great city. Mum worked on the nearby farm, doing jobs her husband once did. Dad had joined the army when the war started. He was wounded in France and came home hobbling on a crutch. People said he was a hero. Anna and Paul hoped he would never go away again, but the doctors put him right and now he was fighting in Africa. Anna often thought of him in the Sahara desert.
