Chapter OneBordeaux, October 1226IVlist rolled lazily over the hills and Sophie shivered in familiar trepidation, powerless to resist the allure of the low summit before her. The shadowy outlines of large shapes became discernible as she moved closer, although she had known all the while that they were there, waiting silently in the falling darkness. As usual, the fog obscured them and she had little more than a sense of their presence, their coldness raising goose pimples on her skin, their chill towering above her as she stepped cautiously between them.Sophie shivered anew, as much from the cold as from her growing fear of what would come, her curiosity compelling her to continue. As far as the eye could see the countryside was shaded in subtle tones of blue, green and gray, all draped in a secretive cloak of ethe-leal mist. She was not alone in her anticipation. It seemed the very earth held its breath and awaited something of import.Something that would come to pass in this clearing, on this night.
