ANTARCTICA
Whenever you stand on a beach, you are next to a huge area of water v\rhich covers nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface. This is the sea.
The animals and plants wre find on the beach give us some clues to the many different species which live in the sea.
Bottom dwellers live from the edges of the sea across the ocean floor and down to the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches. Others swim or float in the open waters, with different groups living at different depths of water. Plants live in the sunlit surface waters but not below this, where it is dark.
Safety note
Exploring the seashore gives a great insight into the wonders of the sea, but please remember that the coast is also a dangerous place. Parents should always watch small children near water, and even experienced swimmers should avoid areas with strong currents and undertows. Watch the tides to avoid being cut off, especially on rocks, sand-spits and headlands. Seaweed-covered rocks are extremely slippery. Stay away from the edge when the water is rough. Avoid getting stuck in soft sand and mud.
(S) You will see this "Be Careful" symbol in places throughout the book. It points-out areas, such as those mentioned above, where you must pay special attention to safety. The symbol also tells you if some animals sting or bité.
