EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION In January of this year, Dr. Ernest Kafka brought to the Editors' attention that 1989 is the 50Ü1 anniversary of the first appearance in print of Heinz Hartmann's classic monograph, Ego Psychology and the Problem of Adaptation. EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION In January of this year, Dr. Ernest Kafka brought to the Editors' attention that 1989 is the 50Ü1 anniversary of the first appearance in print of Heinz Hartmann's classic monograph, Ego Psychology and the Problem of Adaptation. He suggested that it would be fitting to mark the occasion by reassessing its subsequent impact on psychoanalytic theory and practice. In response, he was promptly invited to prepare a paper on the subject, in the hope that The Psychoanalytic Quarterly could include such an evaluation in its final issue of this anniversary year. Dr. Kafka modestly suggested that others might be approached instead of, or in addition to, himself. A number of colleagues were then asked to consider participating in this project. Despite the formidable challenge posed by Hartmann's uncompromising intellectual and expository style, and the added burden of an early deadline, a distinguished group of analysts accepted, with most fascinating results. We believe that readers cannot help but be impressed, as the Editors were, by the rangé of these papers; perhaps that in itself is the best possible tribute to the rich potential of Hartmann's influential work. Drs. Lawrence Friedman and Morris Peltz have each contributed overviews of Hartmann's theoretical conceptualization that are alike only in their enthusiastic appreciation of its enduring value for psychoanalysis. Drs. Ernest Kafka, Ronda Shaw, and Herbert Wyman have all independently chosen to illustrate the clinical utility and advantages offered by thorough understanding of Hartmann's ideas, and it is striking that each of them has taken a different aspect of his work as the point of departure for his or her respective demonstrations.
