PrefaceLike other skills you acquire during your lifetime, skill in writing comes from concentrating on process rather than on product. The Process of Writing is designed specifically to help you communicate, entertain, inform, or persuade effectively through your writing. By developing and practising a process of writing, you should soon be able to produce a desirable product. Think, for a moment, of the process that has gone into perfecting the product of someone other than a writer. An actress, for example, rehearses for weeks, under the guidance of a keen-eyed director, to produce an opening night tour deforce. A professional hockey player practises hour after hour under the watchful eye of his coach to perfect a devastating slapshot. The masterflil summation of a young lawyer is the result of dozens of mock trials before experienced barristers and judges. By the same token, you can produce a clear, well-written, coherent essay or report for your intended reader through practice and by following the advice of those who edit your writing. It may be useful for you to reflect on how you have, thus far, produced a piece of writing. More than likely you have concentrated on the finished product instead of being aware of the process by which you produced it. The Process of Writing focuses on helping you develop and improve your own writing process to achieve a polished product.Throughout this text you will learn how to develop your own process of writing. You will become aware of how to use the prewriting process, where you invent or generate an idea that you consider worth while; the drafting process, where you begin to organize your writing by selecting appropriate supporting evidence; the revising process, where you ask your peers and writing instructor for their editorial comments; and the polishing process, where you make sure that all your mechanics are correct and that your product is ready for its intended reader.Within the, prewriting process you are further encouraged to consider your writing variables. So that you do not begin to draft a piece of writing merely for the sake of fialfiUing an assignment, you should know who your audience (intended reader) will be, what your purpose is (exactly why you are writing), and what your format will be (what form your work will take: letter, essay, report, memo). Besides these essential writing variables, you may have occasion to consider persona (a voice other than your own as the speaker of what you write) and situation (the particular circumstances that may affect your writing or the reading of your intended audience). You will be able to study all the writing variables in detail in Chapter 23.The Process of Writing has three sections: Assignments, Workshops, and Labs. You should spend some time familiarizing yourself with the contents of the text so that you can use it to fulfil your needs.Through xht Assignments you can become involved in many real-life projects, all involving strategies to guide your writing at each stage of the writing process. Models are included so that you can compare your own work with fmished products written by other students or by professional writers. Assignments should be completed with the editorial assistance of your instructor and your peers. Before you work on any assignment, however, you are encouraged to look at the different programs on pages
