Chapter 1 THE SILVER THIMBLE "How hot it is to-day," thought Garnet. ^ "It is the worst day of alL" The thermometer showed one hundred and ten degrees Fahrenheit. ^ The sky was bright and blue and there were no clouds. Sometimes it became dark and big clouds appeared in the sky, but there was no rain. After supper every night Garnet's father came out of the house and looked up at the sky. Then he looked down at his fields. "No," he said, "no rain to-night." The oats and corn were yellow. Everything was dry because it was so hot. "If it does not rain soon, there will be no corn," thought Garnet, "and Father will cut the oats for hay."
