When John Meredith went to live in the Southern Highlands he became interested in the history of the Gundungurra people who had lived there until the 19th century. This book telis the tragic story of the demise of this tribe, and outlines the life of its fascin- ating chief man, the kooradgie Moyengully. A man of note, outstanding both physically and mentally, Moyengully inspired all those who came into contact with him to record the event. Sadly, Moyen- gully was the lant great kooradgie or medicine-man of the Gundungurras and John Meredith, in piecing together contemporary accounts written by settlers and explorers has produced an evocative story of the leader who witnessed the destruction of his tribe and its ancient culture in his own lifetime.
