Preface MY MEMORIES OF EUROPE GO back to a childhood in Weimar Germany and the Nazi Third Reich, and I have been regularly commuting between Europe and America for slightly more than forty years. I have been to most European countries, and they have been my field of study for much of the time. My children went to school on both sides of the Atlantic, my work has been on both sides, too, and I have owned homes in both America and Europe, sometimes a great convenience, at others the cause of great problems.
