Forewordby David Konstant, R.C. Bishop in Central LondonThere is a stage in a young child's life when the only word he seems to know is 'why?'. It can be a little irritating at times, but it reminds us how important it is to be curious. We only discover truth when we start asking questions. People like Aristotle, Marco Polo, Leonardo da Vinci, Amundsen and Einstein are remembered because they discovered some right answers. The world would be different without them. It is good to be curious. Most of us are curious about ourselves and where we have come from. It is fascinating to see how far back we can trace our family history. When we get all the way back, to the very beginning of time, what then? How did it all begin? How will it all end? Why am 1 here? Have people always been the same? Is there a God? Where is God? What is God like? Are there rules for living properly? Is there life after death? Why is there evil in the world? Why doesn't good overcome evil? . . .About 4000 years ago there was a Middle Eastern people who were curious about their origins. They asked the same sort of questions that we ask. They believed that God was telling them about himself and was showing them how to find the right answers.Very slowly, over many himdreds of years, they wrote down the story of their dealings with God. The Bible brings together some of these writings.Jews and Christians believe that the Bible contains an account of God's message to mankind. It is written in many different styles by hundreds of different people. In the Bible there are prayers, hymns, letters, bits of history, legend, parable, prophecy, gospel and so on. In some way God speaks through all of them. That is why we still read the Bible. We are curious to know our origins.I warmly recommend this Children's Bible. It is clearly presented, well put together and effectively illustrated. The first requirement of any version of the scriptures is that it should render the meaning of the original text faithfully. A second, equally important, requirement is that it should readily be comprehensible to its readers. It is clear that in producing this text great care has been taken to ensure that these two requirements are met. Children are introduced to the main themes of the Bible in such a way as to encourage them to read further. It is good to be able to welcome this instructive, helpful and readable bible for children.
