Preface
This book could never have been written had not more than a thousand soldiers, N.C.O.'s, junior and senior officers come to my aid. They placed at my disposal intelligence reports, battle reports, sketches, photographs and accounts of their exjieriences. To all of them I am inordinately grateful.
My special thanks for advice and help are due to the last C.-in-C. of the Army Group Afrika, Colonel-General von Amim, to the former Commander of the Afrika Korps in Libya and Egypt as well as of the 90th Korps in Tunisia, General Nehring, and the gallant Chief of Staff of the Afrika Korps, Lieutenant-General Bayerlein,
A single idea has dominated the mind of the author, his collaborators and advisers: to give a true and accurate accoimt of the North Africa Campaign. I dedicate this book to the memory of the fallen of both sides and trust that it may serve as a warning to the living.
