The author, a former prime minister of Estonia (1992 1994; 1999 2002) and an authority on the history of Estonian armed resistance under the Soviet occupation, sees the armed guerrilla war fought by the forest brothers in the period between 1944 and 1956 as one of the most heroic episodes in Estonian history. The book presents an overview of the reasons for the emergence of the forest brother movement, the founding of the League of Armed Struggle and of the battle the Soviet power fought against the bandits until the archives, including pictures of the most famous forest brothers; there is also a map displaying the places where memorials have been erected in the honour of forest brothers.
