Foreword In our work at the Center for Attitudinal HeaUng we are aware of how important it is to create an environment in which children can feel safe and unthreatened about sharing their innermost thoughts and feelings. One way our children express their thoughts and feelings about catastrophic illness is through drawing and writing, and many of their drawings have been shared through the book they wrote collectively, There Is a Rainbow Behind Every Dark Cloud. Lucia Capacchione's Creative Journal for Children also provides a safe environment for children to, as she describes it, "find the buried treasure within: feelings, experiences, intuition, and dreams." Since grades and criticism are not a part of her journal method, and sharing is voluntary and therefore unthreatening, children can relax and enjoy using this journal as a vehicle for self-exploration and self-expression. From her experience as an educator and art therapist she has found that when children speak from the creative self and are encouraged to say what they really want to say, basic educational skills can be acquired much more easily and naturally. I agree with Lucia when she says, "Our jobs as parents, teachers, and counselors become a true joy when we can be quiet long enough to let the children speak from within." The Creative Journal for Children encourages children to do just that, and as a result, we adults find out who the real teachers are. Gerald G.
