THE BRONTÉ STORY Stage 3 What is genius? And where does it come from? We often think of it as a special gift from God, given to a lucky individual. In fact, we are not sure if the individual is lucky. Genius does not seem to make people happy; it sets them apart, since genius is something that cannot be shared. But, in the case of the Brontés, the genius was given to a family. As a family, it set them apart from the world; they could not be happy away from home. But at home, as a family, their genius could grow. Who taught them to write? They taught themselves. And few people have ever done it better. This is not one of the stories they wrote; it is about them. It is the story that their father did not write, but might have written: the story of the family that he had for such a short time. Tim Vicary, the author of this story, has taught English for many years. He lives and works in York.
