Editor's Foreword
This collection of papers originated as a series of talks in the Forum series of the Voice of America. The Forum program, beamed in English throughout the world, was designed as a channel of communication between American scholars and their counterparts in academic and cultural institutions abroad. It covered a range of subjects in the arts and sciences. In addition to this series, Forum has included programs on biological science, architecture, chemistry, education, modern American literature, American law, music, and other subjects.
In this series, in addition to background material on the institutional organization of the behavioral sciences in this country, their applications, the state of the disciplines, and methods of inquiry, we gave attention to a number of research fields currently important on the American scene. We tried to give some coherence to the list by dealing with those fields in which there is a history of traditional work abroad and which at the same time are pursued by the methods of the modern behavioral sciences in this country. The topics included here are not all those that might have been covered in a series like this, but they will, I think, provide a reasonable sample of the present status of research work.
All of us are indebted to the USIA for the opportunity thus presented, as well as for permission to publish in this form. And we are personally grateful to Mr. Walter Nichols, the Editor of the series, for his help and encouragement.
