PréfacéThe difficult world economic situation in the late seventies and the early eighties in connection with the order of magnitude of the existing financial problems have brought upon wide récognition of the need for increased international coopération amongst banks. In addition, in spite of shrinking world trade, companies have made greater efforts to succeed in foreign markets. This situation has confronted the banks with overall tasks in finding adequate solutions. They have tried to meetthis challenge by internationalising their business. Also Creditanstalt has intensified step by step its presence abroad atthe service of its customers through its branch offices in London and New York as well as the joint ventures established within the EBIC-Group throughout the world. The presence abroad and the close international co-operating brings together participants from différent banking systems. Providing mutual information to business partners and customers on the conditions in the individual countries is an essential prerequisite for success. Creditanstalt has, therefore, initiated this translation of the German book "Struktur ausländischer Bankensysteme: Oesterreich" by Dr. Fritz Diwok, Secretary General of the Austrian Bankers' Association and a competent expert in Austrian banking. The intention is to make a wider public abroad familiar with the Austrian financial institutions and to serve as a guide through the banking system in Austria.Vienna, March 1983Hannes Androsch Chairman of the Managing Board of Creditanstalt-Bankverein
