PREFACE
The production of exemplary lessons initiated by a conference organized under the auspices of Berlin Technical University in December 1991 is intended to contribute towards the clarification of the meaning of technology education and to assist teachers in their work. The meeting theme was "Technology Education, Economic and Industrial Understanding". Participants attended from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, The Netheriands, Poland and from UNESCO.
The production of exemplary lessons is not trivial as at the moment there is no widespread consensus on what technology education should include and different approaches, interpretations or tendencies need to be illustrated and discussed.
This publication is not meant to prescribe what to do, but to offer the lessons as alternatives for analysis and experimentation while providing relevant information on the objectives, level and contextual conditions for which the lessons are designed.
Many interesting questions may be asked about the lessons, for example:
- Is it appropriate to include, in each case, the scientific principles involved?
- How does one achieve a proper balance between cognitive, affective and psychomotor objectives?
- Should the lessons include examples of role-playing or discussion of social issues linked to technology, which may be important for developing attitudes and values?
- Should students be encouraged to develop a personal position about crucial issues derived from inappropriate use of technology in areas such as unemployment, environmental damage, weapons and warfare and destruction of the cultural heritage?
- Should the development of self-esteem be considered an important objective for technology education? (Related to feeUng capable of doing, pride in doing properly and the pursuit and appreciation of quality).
