PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION The general plan of the first edition has been retained throughout this revision. Much significant research has been published in the interval between editions, and the discussions and treatments of the previous edition have been expanded accordingly. Extensive revision has been made of the sections concerning dislocations, imperfections, creep, structures of solid and liquid metals and alloys, textures and transformations. As before, many references have been given not only to original articles but to detailed summaries of research data, symposia, advanced textbooks, and other references that should prove helpful in bridging the gap between this book and a literature that has become very extensive. Grateful acknowledgment is made to the many coworkers in the Institute for the Study of Metals at the University of Chicago, and elsewhere, who have critically reviewed portions of the manuscript, and to my wife who has contributed much time to the project. Permission to reproduce various illustrations has kindly been given by authors and publishers: Fig. 15/1 is from W. L. Bragg, "The Crystalline State," The Macmillan Company; Fig. 20/1 is from R. W. James, "X-ray Crystallography," E. P. Button & Co., Inc.; Figs. 4/XI and 5/XI are from W. Hume-Rothery, "Structure of Metals," The Institute of Metals; Figs. 3/V, 4/V, and 10/VII are from R. W. G. Wyckoff, "The Structure of Crystals," Reinhold Publishing Corporation; Figs. 9/III, 16/XI, and 17/XI are from G. L. Clark, "Applied X-rays," McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc.; Figs. 11/VI, 12/VI, 13/VI, and 11/VII are from W. P. Davey, "A Study of Crystal Structure and Its Applications," McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. ; and Figs. 9, 11 to 13, 16 to 20 of Chap. IV, and Fig. I/X are from the "Metals Handbook," American Society for Metals. A number of prints have kindly been furnished by investigators and manufacturers; references to these and to the source of illustrations and data from the technical journals are given in the text.
