I feel as if I got here by the most subtle trickery imaginable." late January morning in 1977 Sting, his wife of nine months actress Frances Tomelty, their six-week-old son Joe and the family dog all headed for London in a battered Citroen Dyane loaded with everything they owned. "Everybody told me I was crazy. My parents, the headmaster and the people I was working with all said I was mad because I had a wife and kid to support, and I was giving up a salaried career, a pension and a secure niche in life. But I knew I had to make the break or I would have gone mad." They moved in temporarily with an agent friend of his wife's called Pippa Markham, and occupied the living room floor of her one bedroom flat near Battersea. With Sting forced to go on the dole it was a difficult and stressful beginning. "We used to look at Joe lying on the makeshift bed on the floor," said Frances, "look at each other and think, what have we done? But Sting is a determined bread winner and I knew we'd never starve." "It sounds dramatic," he says. "And it was, my life just changed overnight."
