PREFACE The vocabulary of STEDMAN'S POCKET MEDICAL DICTIONARY is derived from the popular 24th Edition of STEDMAN'S MEDICAL DICTIONARYand is intended for students and practitioners in the health professions who find the parent volume too comprehensive or unwieldy for their everyday needs. This abridged edition has attempted to retain the valuable essentials and useful features of the larger book in a more compact and convenient size. STEDMAN'S POCKET MEDICAL DICTIONARY is a selectively edited abridgment whose content has benefited from the ongoing review of the vocabulary of the parent dictionary by its 38 consultants, who represent the major medical specialties and subspecialties. Each term was evaluated initially for its appropriateness as an entry, to provide a balance between older terminology still in use and newer terminology warranting inclusion, and then for the scope of its definition, to avoid an unnecessary sacrifice of content for brevity. The important etymologic content in the parent dictionary was retained as vocabulary entries for prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms, and as derivational information accompanying the terms in the vocabulary. Thus, the dictionary's user is able to ascertain how a term is spelled, pronounced, constructed, and defined. The user is urged to read carefully the following section, "How To Use This Dictionary." An understanding of the principles of this dictionary's organization, formát, and style will not only save time through an efficient search for information but alsó will increase the amount of information obtained. Hindsight, especially after preparation of first editions, reveals what might have been done differently or better. We welcome and encourage suggestions from users of this dictionary as to how best to improve the usefulness of STEDMAN'S POCKET MEDICAL DICTIONARY in subsequent editions. William R.
