Author's NoteIn May 1935, T. E. Lawrence, the Arabian adventurer, was killed in a motorcycle accident involving two boys on bicyclcs. The idea for this növel has come from that incident, but I wish to point out that all characters are fictitious and are in no way intended to resemble known pcople. I have deliberately avoided research into the lives of the two youths who witnessed Lawrence's accident, so that no unconscious representation should appear in these pages. The geographical area covered in the növel is South-West Arabia, where I spent somé of my adolescent years and where I was sent for the final withdrawal of the British in 1966/7.Garry Kilworth, 1985The following phonetically spelt Arabic words, followed by a translation, may prevent frustration:Aqabat - mountain pass Jabal - mountain Hayt - escarpment, hill Hisn - fortSangar - ancient stone firing position Ra's - headland, point Wadi - dry watercourse, river, valley Jambia - broad-bladed Arab dagger Futa - cotton kilt Wabar - coneySimoom - hot suffocating wind.
