Author's Note
The main chapters in this volume are based on lectures delivered at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the 92nd Street 'Y' in New York. The latter would not have been undertaken had it not been for the initiative of Lily Edelman, Director of Adult Education of B'nai B'rith, the cooperation of William Kolodney, former Educational Director of the 92nd Street 'Y', and the dedication of Herbert Reiman, also of B'nai B'rith.
My thanks to Professor Gerson D. Cohen for his valuable suggestions during the preparation of the Synchronology, and to Professor Abraham J. Heschel, my gratitude for sharing with me his own insight on Mendl of Kotzk.
The tales and sayings are translated from the original Yiddish and Hebrew texts, the languages used by the Hasidic Masters and their disciples. Their names and the names of their towns are spelled — arbitrarily — to approximate the way they were pronounced by the Hasidim I knew.
