FOREWORD Everyone who has anything to do with imports and exports will be thankful to the author for having produced this little book. Documents relating to goods which have been, or are to be, conveyed by sea are—^to most people— unintelligible because of the terms and phrases contained in them, and none save those with an encyclopaedic mind can read a Bill of Lading—to name only one of these documents—understandingly. But here is a little book in which are collected together every term and phrase in current use in the Shipping World, together with the precise meaning of those terms and phrases given in simple language, so that none of us need be befogged hereafter. Because he has—by compiling this dictionary— lightened the labours of all traffic and shipping men, the author will have won the gratitude of those engaged in those professions, and one of the most grateful is the undersigned.
