CHAPTER I
BOOK ONE
On the íifth of December in the year 1919 — a year which
was the beginning oí a great change in my life — six o'clock had struck írom the University tower. Our long work-room in the Experimentál Pathology building1 smelled of íormalin.
Professor Usher was still in his study. I could hear him speak over the telephone. I looked up at the two other as-sistants.
Spence stood at his bench.2 He was waiting for his wife. She came here every Friday and they went out together to dinner and the theatre. I could see the shadow oí his dis-figured face on the wall.
Lomax had finished his work and was getting ready to leave. He looked bored,3 as usual.
44Let's go somewhere tonight, Shannon."
The invitation was flattering. But this evening I could not go anywhere.
"How about you, Spence?"
'Tm sorry, I can't. I'm waiting for Muriéi."
"This is an unsociable town," Lomax complained.
