PROLOGUE
I am going to tell you a love story. A true one. Before I begin, I want you to know a couple of things. For starters, neither boy nor girl is love's young dream, certainly not the girl, seeing as she's me, and not the boy either, who happens to be the man I love and is about to celebrate his fortieth birthday. For a second thing, however much I want the story to be neat, and fit into a tidy box, it doesn't involve two people, but five - or even six or seven, depending on how you look at it. That in itself is no break from convention. All good romantic stories involve people beyond the magic inner couple. Third, the story revolves around war, but it is not my intention to address the horrors of war or whether any war can ever be 'good'. Whatever the physical, emotional and moral suffering caused by war, men and women carry on wanting to fall in love, or out of it, wanting babies and wanting to raise them.
