PREFACE My excuse for another book dealing with the relations of church and state is that these pages are not concerned with theory nor primarily with warnings against a totalitarian state, but with the relations of our kind of church— in this instance the Protestant church—to our kind of state. If there is any merit in the discussions it arises from the everyday facts which I have tried to keep in mind. I am indebted to the Faculty of the Vanderbilt School of Religion, a school for which I have a peculiar affection, for the invitation to deliver the Cole Lectures for 1946, on which this book is based.
