Introduction
WHY RENAISSANCE MANAGEMENT?
ALTHOUGH the title of this book contains the word 'renaissance', it is not a book about history, but a book about the future. It is a book about people, and how organizations really can make people their most important asset. It is not another theory, or an attempt to outline the 'one best way' discovered by a particular organization or guru. Instead, it tries to fit together the different steps, big and small, that many organizations are taking in order to respond to the challenges they have in common.
There is scarcely an aspect of human existence that is not shaped and influenced by organizations. They are amongst the most complex manifestations of human activity, operating in multi-faceted and multi-layered ways, which can often defy understanding and analysis. In an environment in which the winds of change blow strongly, and from capricious directions, managing these organizations can be a fraught task. For many of them, a re-evaluation of the context, purpose and process of management is long overdue.
