PREFACE
The first version of this monograph was completed while the first-named author held a visiting appointment on the College Mathematics Staff of the University of Chicago and was engaged in research supported by National Science Foundation grant NSF G-1978. Clerical expenses were defrayed by a research grant made by the University of California to the second-named author.
The first version was submitted to the University of California Publications in Mathematics in the summer of 1956. Certain additional results were incorporated into the text in the summer of 1958, after the first version had been approved for publication. These results had been obtained during the academic years 1956-58. In 1957-58 both authors held fellowships from the Institute for Advanced Study, and the second-named author was engaged in research supported by National Science Foundation grant NSF G-3466. Wherever such additional material occurs, this fact is recorded in a footnote.
The authors are indebted to Dana Scott and Stanley Tennenbaum for contributing to the discovery of several theorems; to Richard Friedberg and Anil Nerode for permission to make use of certain of their results prior to publication; and to Anil Nerode and the referee appointed by the University of California Publications in Mathematics for numerous valuable suggestions. Finally they wish to express their debt to Alfred Tarski whose work on cardinal algebras has influenced several phases of the present investigation.
