INTRODUCTION
There are five papers in tlie Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) examination. Each paper is worth 40 mariis, apart from Paper 4, Listening, which is worth 20. A total of 180 marics can be obtained and the pass marl; is approximately 65% of the total marks awarded. There are five grades: pass grades are A, B and C; fail grades are D and E. For Papers 1, Reading, and 4, Listening, you will have to write your answers on a separate answer sheet (the OMR sheet).
PAPER 1 READING COMPREHENSION
(1 hour) 40 marks
Section A
Vocabulary multiple-choice
1 This consists of 25 sentences with blanks which you must fill in with one of a choice of four words or phrases. For example;
She has been taken to hospital suffering from a disc.
A torn B slipped C broken D sprained
2 There is one mark for each correct answer. Section B
Comprehension
1 This consists of three reading passages which vary in style. Passage 1 is longer and more general in subject matter; passage 2 is shorter and of a more specialized nature; passage 3 is more practical and may consist of one or more extracts.
2 There are 15 multiple-choice questions based on the passages. You have to read the passages then choose the most suitable answer, or finish a sentence, for example:
What did the writer think was out of place in the cafe? A the modern decor B the respectable-looking students C the talk about the war D the presence of an army officer
3 The questions test your understanding of the passages as a whole, rather than the meaning of specific vocabulary.
4 There are two marks for each correct answer.
5 You have to indicate your answer on a separate answer sheet (the OMR sheet), by shading in a lozenge.
Together Sections A and B carry 55 marks, which are scaled down to a mark out of 40.
PAPER 2
COMPOSITION
(2 hours) 40 marks
1 You have to write two compositions chosen from a total of five different types including discursive, descriptive and narrative compositions; a directed writing task; and a composition based on an optional set text.
2 The compositions should be about 350 words long, apart from the directed writing task, which should be 300 words long.
3 Marks are allocated for fluency, accuracy, naturalness and appropriateness of language. The relevance and organization of the material are also taken into account.
PAPER 3 USE OF ENGLISH
(2 hours) 40 marks
Section A
This consists of four different types of exercise testing structure and usage.
Cloze
1 This is a passage which has 20 gaps at irregular intervals. You have to fill in each gap using one word only, for example:
Devotees of soccer, rugby and rowing now regularly
train to music; even those who take (1)
in weight-lifting, which demands enormous physical
strength, and (2) in athletics fields
events, find that exercise to music is beneficial
2 Various types of word are deleted but the majority of items test structure. The type of words which are omitted are verbs, determiners, connectors, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and nouns.
Sentence transformations
1 These consist of eight sentences and eight incomplete sentences.
2 You have to finish each incomplete sentence to produce a sentence as similar as possible in meaning to the original. The initial word or words of the incomplete sentence are provided, for example:

Blank-fllling
1 There are six sentences which you have to complete with a suitable word or phrase, for example:
If this type of research

2 This section often tests knowledge of idiomatic or colloquial language.
