CHAPTER 1 Introduction You don't have to be stressed to read this book!In fact, the book was written as much for people who want to take positive action in managing their lives, as for people who want to learn how to cope with pressure. You don't have to read the book straight through, cover to cover, to find the bits relevant to you. There is a questionnaire on pages 15-18. The remaining chapters each cover one area of self-management. You can use the questionnaire to get a feel for what is covered by each chapter and then turn directly to the ones that are most relevant to you. Before you begin this, however, please take five minutes to read over hints and tips on how to make the most of this book (see below). Most of us read in such a casual way that we fail to get full value out of material we study. Just using a few of the tips will give you a more worthwhile return on the time and energy you spend reading. Ten suggestions to help you to get the most out of this material 1, The first point is to deliberately set out to learn. We often read in rather a casual way (for example, how much can you remember from yesterday's paper?). It takes a special effort to consciously try to learn; to identify ideas that we might use and then work these into our everyday routine. Research shows that this is exactly what effective learners do: they set out to learn and they use every way they know how to help them to learn.
