Seven Country Dances, Gr. 168 (all in D major) .121 NOTES Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) made his monumental contribution to piano literature with his sonatas, by the side of which the minor prices collected in this volume are minor indeed. The best known among them are the various sets of Bagatelles, the first set of which goes back, in draft form, as far as 1782. Nos. 10-15 (Grove Nos. 164-169) are likewise very early works. The "Andante Favori" was originally intended to be the slow movement of the "Waldstein" Sonata, Op. 53. The Rondo a Capriccio (Op. 129) is probably the closest Beethoven ever came to writing a brilliant "encore" piece, in which capacity it turns up quite frequently in the concert hall. The present edition is based on the Complete Works edition of Beethoven's works, originally published by Breitkopf Härtel. - 124
