There is something more than mere beauty in the hold a tine old face has over one. One feels somehow as if there could be no getting away from the real man or woman shining through the eyes and writ in lines across the face. Despite all attempt at hiding-motives and traits of character the fingers of Time insist on making their own firm imprint of what has come and gone in a life, and there is no getting away from it. The faces of the old are unmistakable indexes of what has been theirs in life, and nothing can be finer or more truly beautiful than a calm, peaceful old face rich with the markings of years well spent. I remember distinctly how once as a young girl I happened to come upon an old couple sitting on a pile of wreckage that had been washed high upon the sands of the Pacific Coast. They were both looking quietly out to sea, watching the distant flecks of white-sailed fishing smacks appearing and disappearing against the blue of the sky line. They must both have been well over eighty, but-they formed the most beaunful picture of a man and a woman sitting side by side that one could imagine. Both had snow-white hair and tall, though slightly bent, figures, and while the lines of the two old faces were deep and showed that they had borne sorrows together, their expressions were so calm and kindly that they seemed positively to exhale comfort and peace on everything about them. She had on a very soft grey gown and lace cap, and every now and then the old man would gently replace her white shawl,
