Chapter One
Diana's mother called goodbye and slammed the front door. She'd gone to buy some tacks and another tube of gungy stuff to stick the bedroom carpet together. They had been in the house for one day.
Diana chased the Isist rice crispie round the dish twice before her spoon caught it. She was full because that was the end of her third helping.
She rinsed the dish and the spoon clean with water from the shiny new tap and left them upside down on the shiny new draining board. The windows above the sink had beige smears that the builders hadn't cleaned away. As Dicina turned, her foot hit one of the packing cases on the floor. They were full of china that wasn't unpacked yet. Her feet sounded noisy on the bare white boards that stretched across the hall. Everywhere there was the smell of fresh pciint mixed with new wood.
As it was half-term her new school was closed until Monday. She wouldn't know anyone there and she didn't care if Monday never came. Today wasn't going to be any better.
