Rubens, Peter Paul (Siegen, Nassau, 28 June 1577 — Antwerp, 30 May 1640), Southern Netherlands painter, drawer, and diplomat, son of Jan Rubens, an Antwerp attorney and alderman, and Maria Pypelinckx, received an impeccable humanist education, first in Cologne — to which his father had fled because of his Protestant convictions (ca. 1570) — and then in Antwerp, where his mother settled definitively in 1589 after the death of her husband in 1587. In 1592, he became a student of Tobias Verhaecht, a landscape painter, and then of Adam van Noort and Otto van Veen. In 1598, he became a master in the Antwerp guild. Two years later, Rubens traveled with his older brother Philip to Italy, where he remained for eight years as the official painter of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. In this period, he visited Venice, Florence, and Genoa, but stayed most of the time in Rome (1601-1602,1605-1606,1607-1608). Given an official mission by Philip III of Spain, he also stayed a short time at the Court in Madrid (summer 1603). News of the impending death of his mother brought Rubens back to Antwerp on 25 October 1608, where he settled for good. Shortly thereafter he became the official city painter of Antwerp and illustration designer for the Officina Plantiniana. On 23 September 1609, he was appointed court painter for the Archduke and duchess, Albert and Isabella. On 3 October 1609, he married Isabella Brant. In 1610, he bought property on the Wapper in Antwerp on which, between 1616 and 1621, he built an imposing complex including a residence, a garden pavilion, and an atelier (the present Rubens House, restored 1939-1946; museum since 1946). After the death of Archduke Albert (1621 ), Rubens remained court painter in the service of Isabella, who also sent him on important diplomatic missions. Thus, he was closely involved in the negotiations (1623-1625) with the Northern Netherlands on a renewal of the Truce. In 1628 and 1629, he went to Madrid and London, where he laid the foundation for the peace treaty concluded between Spain and England on 15 November 1630. Upon the failure of new negotiations (1631-1633) with the United Provinces on the conclusion of a treaty between the two Netherlands, he bid farewell to his diplomatic career. After the death of his wife Isabella (1626), Rubens married the sixteen-year-old Hélene Fourment in 1630. Apres la mort de l'archiduc Albert (1621 ), Rubens resta au service d'Isabelle qui, a partir de 1623, lui confia d'importantes missions diplomatiques. Ainsi se trouva-t-il melé de pres (1623-1625) aux négociations avec les Pays-Bas septentrionaux en vue d'une reconduction de la Treve. En 1628 et 1629, il séjourna successivement a Madrid et a Londres, ou il jeta les bases du traité de paix qui devait etre conclu entre l'Espagne et l'Angleterre le 15 novembre 1630. Mais l'échec de nouvelles tractations avec les Provinces-Unies, a propos d'un traité entre les Pays-Bas du Nord et ceux du Sud, mit fin a sa carriere diplomatique. Apres la mort de sa femme Isabelle (1626), Rubens épousa en 1630 la jeune Hélene Fourment, âgée de 16 ans. En 1635, il acquit, a Elewijt, l'agréable do- Rubens, Peter Paul (Siegen, Nassau, 28.
