PREFACE BY THE GENERAL EDITORAmong the momentous events of our twentieth century we cannot fail to mention, as of utmost interest and significance, the luminous apparitions of our Lady to three shepherd children in a mountainous recess of Portugal: Jacinta, Francis, and Lucy, the three little seers who will enter into our lives never to be forgotten. On predicted days, at the place assigned, in the presence of ever increasing multitudes, the heavenly visits took place, culminating finally in the overwhelming spectacle of light enacted in a noonday sky on the last day of the apparitions. It was God's own fiery signature, as has been well remarked, that now flamed across the heavens in the sight of some sixty thousand witnesses, confirming all that here had been said and done by Mary Immaculate. But of greatest importance to us is her message itself as conveyed in these pages. The basis of the present volume is the authoritative work issued by the Portuguese Jesuit, Gonzaga da Fonseca, professor at the Biblical Institute at Rome, and adapted in a French translation by Canon Barthas. The latter book has met with high commendations and won the special approbation of the Holy See. It has been used to best advantage in the English rendition offered here, suited in particular to our English-reading public and retaining all the full reliability of the original.Joseph Husslein, S.J., Ph.D.General Editor, Science and Culture SeriesSt. Louis University January 14, 1947
