This Bulletin contains the papers and proceedings of the FAO/SIDA Workshop on Organic Materials and Soil Productivity in the Near Bast, >diich was held with the financial assistance of SIDA, on the premises of the Faculty of Agriculture, Alexandria ISiiversity, Egypt, üi 1974» at the World Pood Conference resolutions were passed urging the greater utilization of organic materials to improve the fertility of the soils for maximum crop production. PAO, in cooMration with the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA), assumed a leading role in promoting the use of organic materials for improving soil productivity. The Expert Consultation on Organic Materials as Fertilizers (Rome, 1974)f the Workshop on Organic Recycling in Asia (Bankok, 1976), the present Workshop on Organic Materials and Soil Productivity (Alexandria, 1978) and others in Latin America and Africa are part of this promotion prograomie. "
In view of the important complementary effect of organic materials to mineral fertilizers and their role in improving the soil's physical properties, the Workshop has dealt with a wide variety of items on techniques and uses of the organic materials and wastes incltiding composting, bio-fertilizers and hiogas, the environmental and health aspects, and action guidelines for follow-up activities in the Near Bast countries.
The proceedings of the Workshop present sound recommendations, the implementation of which would assist in improving the soil productivity, raising crop production levels and producing a better quality of life.
