Tor heaven's sake! I'm hardly a starry-eyed teenager, am I? I've given the brush-off to quite a few enterprising characters in my time.'Amusement creased Leo's lean cheeks. 'That I can well believe.'Madeleine found herself laughing. He obviously meant well, even if it was none of his business. 'Why don't you like Adam? Pinch one of your girlfriends, did he?''No. And I didn't say I didn't like him. He's a great lad, but that doesn't make him right for you.''And what makes you an expert on the subject?' Tor heaven's sake! He's a great lad, but that doesn't make him right for you.''And what makes you an expert on the subject?' Madeleine argued. 'You hardly know me.''True enough. All my preconceived notions are rapidly going down the drain. I can't imagine how Edith pupped you.' For a moment or two Leo sat looking at her in a speculative sort of fashion, then abruptly he opened the car door. 'Well, come on. I've still got to take Skipper for his constitutional. And if you tell me that it's your job when you're home, I'll dot you one.'CHAPTER ONEThe very last place Madeleine had expected to be for the spring bank holiday was back in a small market town on the borders of Dartmoor. Yet here she was at ten p.m. on a damp, chilly night, bypassing Exeter, making for her old home. In less than an hour she would be there. And what she would find was anybody's guess. With a heartfelt sigh of something between anxiety and resignation she changed the VW down to second gear to climb tike next steep rise in Devon's switchback landscape. If Dr Leo Lamont had phoned a day later shp might already have been crossing the Channel to Brittany with Adam instead. Madeleine sighed again, and promptly felt guilty for lamenting her lost holiday when her parents needed her.At lunchtime that day she couldn't have been happier in her role as junior sister on Women's Surgical at the prestigious teaching hospital in London. Her first three months were just completed and her friendship with Adam Forest, the surgical registrar, was getting interesting. Then, out of the blue, that phone call. At the time she had been helping one of the auxiliaries to prop up Mrs Brown, who was feeling poorly after surgery for a hiatus hernia.
