Destination New Zealand
The world's biggest film set is also the world's must-visit destination for the umpteenth year in a row - no wonder the locals are smiling. They've long known they live in paradise, and now everyone else does too.
In recent years New Zealand has been punching well above its weight and demanding to be noticed. Its movies, music, wine, progressive politics and clean green image have been kicking goals around the world, and people are paying attention in ways the country never dreamed possible. This small, remote nation, with a population of only four million, now hosts 2.4 million international visitors each year. And you'd be hard-pressed to find one that has left NZ's shores disappointed.
Why is that? Well, it's undoubtedly got something to do with the vast, empty landscapes. Words simply cannot do justice to this country's outlandishly beautiful scenery, but a pretty backdrop is not all that NZ has going for it. Genuinely friendly locals go out of their way to ensure visitors feel welcome. There's a vibrant Maori culture too, for this is a country that recognises and respects its indigenous people. And everyone rejoices in and treasures their magnificent natural surrounds. It's no surprise, then, to discover that visitors regard the world as a kinder, safer and softer place down here.
Have no doubt, you're in for the trip of a lifetime. When it's over, you'll take home memories of superb hospitality, first-class food and wine, and a smorgasbord of outdoor activities, as mild or as mad as you wished them to be. And there'll be no forgetting the natural beauty that left you breathless. One trip will not be enough.
