Preface
The study of the neurosciences has undergone remarkable growth over the past two decades. To a large extent, such advancements have been made possible through the development of new methodologies; especially in the fields of neuropharmacology, molecular biology, and neuroanatomy. Neuroscience courses presented in medical schools and related schools ofhealth professions generally are unable to cover all of the material that has evolved in recent years. For this reason, Neuroscience: PreTest Self-Assessment and Review was written for medical students preparing for national boards as well as for undergraduate students in the health professions.
The subject matter of this book is mainly the classical topics of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. Also, an attempt was made to encompass the subjects of molecular and biophysical properties of membranes, neuropharmacology, andhigher functions of the nervous system. Moreover, clinical correlations for each part of the central nervous system, often utilizing MRI and CT scans, are presented. While it is virtually impossible to cover all aspects of the neurosciences, the objective of this book was to include its most significant components as we currently understand them.
The author wishes to express his gratitude to MajidB. Shaikh, Ph.D., for his modifications of the line drawings and to Leo Wolansky, M.D. and Alan Zimmer, M.D. for providing the MRI's and CT scans.
